Pond Goddess

Knocked the dust off the ol' golf clubs today.  Met MJ out for 9 holes after work. I can't say it was the worst game of golf I've ever played but it certainly was not the best.  We did have a fun time though, which is the only reason I play.

Let's see... I had two WTF holes, fed the Pond Goddess twice, shot par on one hole and could count strokes using only one hand on the rest of the holes. If I had not fed the Pond Goddess on the ninth hole I would have shot par on that one too.  Had to shoot around ducks on the eighth hole, they always intimidate me, if it had been geese no problem, they're big they can take a hit.  But the Mallards are little things and there were babies too, so the eighth hole was one of the WTF holes.

I know golf is not my game and I'll never be very good at it but I like to play, I get to be outside and socialize with my peeps and I always get my moneys worth ;)

Now that I've finally swung my clubs I'm ready for the tournament I'm playing in on August 4th. We have our title to defend doncha know.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a unique take on how to deal with criminals.  I can't say that I disagree with him.  I think some of our laws need to be changed for example legalize drugs and throw out the laws based on someone's moral ideas such as sodomy and prostitution. If we changed just a few things we could open up the prisons for the "real" criminals.

I also do NOT believe in the death penalty, it is just plain wrong!  No one has the right to take the life of another human being, no way, no how! Once you have taken the person's life you have set them free, they no longer have to deal with their crime(s). No restitution, no penalty, they go free, there is no punishment in death. And what about the person who injects the criminal or flips the switch have they not just committed the same crime? If killing someone is a crime what difference is there in the method? The only person who has the right to take your life is yourself.

This train of thought brings me down an entirely different path.  The idea of responsibility...I take full responsibility for everything that happens in my life.  I believe I created it therefore I am responsible for it, good or bad.  One of the things that bothers me the most is when someone does not take responsibility for their life.  "Oh it must be Gods will" this statement comes flying out anytime something bad happens.  But step back if something good happens then "ooh I must have done something right." "I'm a good person."  NO, you create both the good and the bad, take responsibility! If  your life sucks, take responsibility and change it, if your life is good take credit for that too. You are just as responsible for being a winner as a loser, a victim as an oppressor, you created this life for better or for worse. We all create our lives based on our thoughts, ideas, beliefs and emotions.  Just think for a moment about Santa Claus, remember when you were a small child?  You believed totally that there was a Santa (that is if your family was Christian) you saw him everywhere, tried real hard to be good.  What happened?  You grew up and discovered there was no Santa.  See if you believe in something, it's real, no questions asked. As you grow you discover that you can make things happen, you just have to believe.

Most people don't want to take responsibility, that's what brings us to organized religion. And now I've gotten completely off my subject of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, check him out and let me know what you think.

Remember you created it...

Quiet

It's funny, one of the things I treasure most is my quiet time, my personal time in space. Yes, I mean in space. Most people who I spend time with think I'm hyper, chatty, a social butterfly, always on the move and that's true however I spend most of my time by myself. The reason I go out with people is to be social, chatty and interact with people. I have had more relationships end because the person I'm with realizes that I am not the party girl. I need no stimulus, noise, TV, radio, I am perfectly content with complete silence.  I can spend hours in my yard, reading, sitting at the lake, just being alone.  This can cause people to think something is wrong. Are you mad? Are you sad? No. I just like being quiet.  I like to allow my mind to wander...

Words

I've always loved words and developed a love for reading at a young age.  I think this is something I got from my dad, I have never known him to not be reading a book, usually more than one.  As a child I remember my dad always reading at night, it seemed that he never slept. He was always awake reading at the kitchen table when I would go to bed and up and gone for the day when I woke up.  Throughout my childhood it did not matter what time I came home at night my father would be up reading usually with a bowl of ice cream or eating peanut butter. And always with a cup of coffee.  To this day my dad drinks coffee all day and all night. He never said to me "read a book" or anything it's just something I picked up from him.  It intrigued me to see him read so much, I guess I figured there had to be something to it.

As far back as I can remember I have always been reading a book, it does not matter what the subject is.  I have my favorites but will read pretty much anything I can get my hands on and love to read things that other people are reading.  I always get a kick out of what my friends, family or co-workers are reading, it's like an inside view of their minds.  It seems to give me a better understanding of the person. So it's great with they pass along the books they have read, especially when it is one of their favorites.

And words, I look for new words all the time and love it when I have to look them up in the dictionary.  I remember the first time I saw the word chaos written, I had no idea how to pronounce it, I kept trying to say it with the ch sound like in church. I finally had to ask my dad and once he said the word I knew the meaning and have never forgotten it.  Another word that perplexed me the first time I saw it was cul-de-sac, not only did I not have a clue as to how to say it I did not know what it was.  There were no cul-de-sacs in my neighborhood.

So today I bring you my "words of the day" I even had to look a couple up in the dictionary.
Enjoy :)

CHILDREN!

Let me start off with saying, I like kids, they are highly entertaining and I've learned a lot from them over the years.  But let me tell you there are places they do not belong like at the grocery store when I'm trying to get my groceries. Over the years I have found great humor in kids at the store like the little boy who was messing with the fruit. I could tell he was trying hard not to let his mom see what he was doing.  I know he did not know that I was watching him as he strolled along in the fruit aisles messing with all of the fruit.  Thankfully I had already gotten what I needed.  When he came to the tomatoes I knew I was in for a show.  Sure enough he did not disappoint me.  He squeezed a cherry tomato until it popped and went right in his face and eyes.  hee hee hee. The poor boy could not say anything because he knew if he did he would be in trouble, so he had to walk around wiping the tomato seeds off his face.  And the little girl who was making the most God awful noises embarrassing her mom, I had to laugh out loud at that one.  But those are the exceptions, most of the children in the grocery store are out of control.  I cannot believe how kids act in public, if I did that as a child I would have gotten my ass whipped.

Today was a prime example, I'm in a hurry and just wanted to pick up a few things to get me through the next week.  I get in the check out line and there is a women and 4 kids, three out of the cart and one in the cart just checking out. Right in front of me is another woman whom I found out was with the them. The woman with the kids checks out and is packing her groceries, the woman directly in front of me has only a few items, that's why I picked the lane, so she pushes her cart out of the way. I get to the cashier and push, well I attempt to push my cart through so I can start packing right away.  The kids are all in the way, they start playing with big ass bouncing balls and the balls are flying all over the place.  They don't move as I try to get around them, the mom does not say a word to them and that is when I discover the woman directly ahead of me was with them, she tries to corral the kids but they don't listen.  I'm finally able to get my cart around them and over to my side of the conveyor.  I start packing my groceries amid bouncing balls and wild children.  The mom ignores them and allows them to do whatever.  The teller rings me out and I try to get back to her to pay but I can't get around the kids.  Little bastards!  I make a quick dodge around one and get to the teller, pay my bill and have to fight my way back to my groceries.  I pack up as quickly as possible and get the hell out.  The mother of those kids never said a word to them. They were all over the place.

Why do people bring kids to the grocery store, it's not like they want to go.  There should be adult only times at the store, so people like me can get in, buy our groceries and get back out without having to deal with the kids. If  you can't keep them under control, don't bring them out in public, that's what duct tape is for. :) kidding ok not really.

NAPS

I'm not a nap taker, my little brother is, he takes a nap every day when he gets home from work, but not me.  I get up at 0430 every morning no matter what time I go to bed at night, the alarm goes off at 0430 and I am up, I head off to work, come home and continue on my day until I crawl into bed.

Today however, I took a nap.  I have completely burnt myself out the last couple weeks. Going non-stop from sun up to sun down. I think my body finally said "ENOUGH!" I've injured myself twice; once last week and once this week so I'm thinking my lack of snooze time is affecting me in a physical manner.

My normal routine is to come home, let the dog out, put down some kibbles, put my things away and relax a bit then make dinner and finish reading the newspaper.  Well, today while attempting to read the paper I could not keep my eyes open, I kept nodding off so finally I gave up. I decided I obviously need a nap.  I turned on the fan, laid down and took a nice little nap, now I'll probably be up all night but I can at least finish reading the paper. Beings it's my Friday I can stay up late do some chores and sleep in tomorrow.  I have a ride planned in the afternoon and a fund raiser in the evening.

I don't think I'll make a habit of this nap thing but it sure was nice :)

Thoughts

Sometimes I find things in the most unlikely places. Here's a thought for ya:

True friends challenge their own opinions on a continual, lifelong basis. Make it a habit to ask yourself whether you're seeing the issue unobstructed, or whether you're getting only the part that fits in your own frame of reference...

1943 Guide to Hiring Women

The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine.
This was written for male supervisors of women in the work force during World War 11.

Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees: There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.

Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties:

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls -  those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4 Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine  psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words they way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy.

Just a little something I found on my desk the other day. I kinda like #8, I always feel more confident and efficient when I can tidy my hair and apply fresh lipstick.  :)  I think I'll run that one by my manager tomorrow.

Imagine what it was like for these women in the workplace back then.  I forget sometimes how far we have actually come.

MY BIPOLAR WEEK

Not to offend anyone with mental health issues but I have had one hellacious week full of high highs and low lows.  I personally think it is easier to deal with a really crappy week or a really good week but one with the ups and downs I can't seem to get a handle on. Example:  I had several really good rides this past week but sustained an injury yesterday that will keep me from riding for the next couple days. I even had to drive to work today, not such a bad thing, I did get to stop for a large vanilla Latte with an extra shot of espresso which I cannot do when I ride my bike.

My co-worker has been on vacation last week, this week and will continue to be so until the end of next week so I have had to do his job in addition to mine. I'm trying to save someone from losing her job, if I fail to pull the case together she will be out of work. We have a big ass audit coming on July 16, which I need to be prepared for and I have to squeeze all of this into an 8 hour day!  Talk about a wee bit of stress and you know my favorite stress reliever besides beer is riding my bike which I cannot do.

The bike shop called today to tell me the helmet I ordered will not be ready until the end of August.  The end of August! what the hell good will that do me?  If I wanted to change colors I could maybe get it at the beginning of August, again what good does that do me?  I'll be in Nevada the better part of August.

Wait a minute maybe this is turning into a crappy week and I was just having high hopes??? I mean it is only Wednesday.  I think I need an attitude adjustment, I'll go to bed early, meditate on happy thoughts.  I couldn't ride my bike today but I did go to the bike shop and purchase some things for my bike which I can install tomorrow and get prepared for my ride on Sunday, I got my laundry and grocery shopping done. Tomorrow is my Friday and I have a three day weekend.  Hopefully I will be riding Friday morning, Saturday I'm going to a cabin party and Sunday I have the Tour of Saints ride.  Hell I'm feeling better already! Forget everything I said, this is going to be a fantastic week.  I already got the crappy part over ;)

I'm going to bed and start fresh in the morning, I can look forward to another vanilla latte!

Nature Break

Nothing like nature to remind us of the wonders of life.  This cactus resides in my backyard, it blooms once every 5 years.  I moved it from my parents yard to mine about 2 years ago and it has gone crazy.  Survived two Minnesota winters in my yard so far. I know there has been a lot of grumbling about all the rain we've had this year, but I can tell you my flowers loved it.  Everything is growing. To steal a quote from my friend Judy "It's a beautiful thing."
